Rosberg: Pole lap one of my best ever

Rosberg in pole position to claim victory on Sunday

Nico Rosberg has put his Mercedes in Pole position for the 2016 Singapore Grand Prix, with team mate Lewis Hamilton starting in third behind Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull.

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg of Germany steers his vehicle out of his team garage during the third practice session for the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix on the Marina Bay City Circuit Singapore, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016.

Both Red Bulls will start on an alternate tyre strategy to Mercedes, after passing through Q2 on the super-soft tyre, and Ricciardo hopes it will pay dividends by allowing him to complete a longer first stint than Rosberg and Hamilton.

Kimi Raikkonen was fifth fastest in his Ferrari and will be joined on the third row of the grid by Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz Jr. "One of my top three laps ever".

The four-time world champion, who complained about anti-roll bar issues with his auto, will start his race from an unfamiliar spot - at the back of the grid - after the team were unable to fix his vehicle in time for the first qualifying session.

Rosberg improved by over two seconds to lead the pack with a 1:43.020 lap, while Hamilton sat in second four-tenths back. "I haven't been able to string them (laps) together".

Last year's victor Sebastian Vettel will start from the back of the grid.

"I am definitely happy with that one", Rosberg, who finished fastest in the final practice session, was quoted as saying by BBC Sport after sealing the 29th pole of his 199-race career.

"We kept our heads down and a small designated group looked at the data for two days and then parked the topic and concentrated on Suzuka".

"It was clear I wasn't going to improve significantly to save myself into Q2 to have another look and fix it, so that's why we chose to come in after the second lap".

"It's not been my weekend so far", admitted Hamilton. "Nico did a great job to show the true potential of the vehicle and hopefully tomorrow I'll try and at least get one step up ahead to get that front row for the team".

"We don't really know what happened, initially I thought it was at the front but then it felt like the rear bar had broken".

Max Verstappen wasn't so pleased with his qualifying after suffering from balance issues which upset the tyres. "I would say we are bit surprised we are the only ones", he said. Fernando Alonso is the meat in a Force India sandwich, with Nico Hulkenberg eighth, Alonso ninth and Sergio Perez rounding out the top 10. "I like that statistic", Rosberg said.
