Bob Dylan wins 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Vatican newspaper says some of Bob Dylan's lyrics are handsome, the work of a true artist who influenced entire generations.

Dylan beats American novelists Philip Roth, Joyce Carol Oats, Don DeLillo and perennial favorite, Japanese author Haruki Murakami.

Asked if he thought Dylan's Nobel lecture - traditionally given by the laureate in Stockholm later in the year - would be a concert, replied: "Let's hope so".

Sara Danius, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said he was chosen because Dylan is a "great poet in the English speaking tradition".

Dylan's impact on popular culture was huge and his influence as a lyricist extends to every major music figure and songwriter of the last 50 years, from the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Ed Sheeran and beyond. I wish the world leaders listen to his songs be it "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They are A-Changin'".

Bob Dylan was named the victor of the 2016 Nobel Prize in literature Thursday in a stunning announcement that for the first time bestowed the prestigious award to someone primarily seen as a musician.

The 75-year-old rock musician is the first American to be awarded the prize since novelist Toni Morrison received it back in 1993, and he received it for "having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".

He will receive the award at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the death of the founder of the prize, Alfred Nobel.
