Doctor Strange review: when pretty weird is not weird enough

Benedict Cumberbatch at Doctor Strange London premiere

Yet, while Dr. Stephen Strange is markedly different to most of the other characters in the Marvel stable, his first foray in film feels Strangely (geddit?) familiar. Tilda Swinton is perhaps the best character in the entire film as the "Ancient One".

In short, Doctor Strange has more important things to worry about than the innocence of Bucky Barnes and the Sokovia Accords.

When asked by IGN what said sequel could possibly entail, director Scott Derrickson was quick to come up with an idea, suggesting a ideal villain for Benedict Cumberbatch's caped wonder to battle in a future installment.

With Guardians love firmly in the bank (and ahead of its anticipated sequel), Benedict Cumberbatch's arrogantly awesome surgeon Stephen Strange could have been something so "out there" in terms of the studio's formula it may have alienated the very audience it was aimed at.

For all its flaws though, there's still some fun to be had with "Doctor Strange" - the film encompasses some of the most dazzlingly nauseating special effects sequences in quite some time (catch it in IMAX), and it's never boring, in fact the yarn plays out effortlessly punchy and fast.

Artist, Andrea Di Vito shows us the astral form is just on the fringe of odd and is trying to get out, but is stuck.

Cumberbatch is capable as always, though the role doesn't give him much to work with, and Swinton - setting aside "white-washing" controversy over the casting of a Scottish woman where the original comic books call for a Tibetan man - is convincing as the wise, bald and otherworldly guru. The movie releases in India on November 4. Kids preferred a hero who punched out foes, rather than spouting tongue-twisting mystical mumbo-jumbo at them. The Sorcerer Supreme looks chuffed even when he's a dog; However, Cumberbatch does seem a bit concerned about the acting chops of his canine counterpart. I don't know where they were on the script process, but it was before they were in production.

"He said he had a (spiritual) fight just like that with some guy down in Mexico".

In the first bonus scnes, which runs mid-credits, Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) are having a drink - Thor is chugging a stein of beer that magically keeps refilling.

The other night, I watched a movie about a selfish, devil-may-care genius who suddenly ends up injured and helpless.

Well, the film certainly had the weirdest last day of shooting of any Marvel movie. "So it was a great moment".

Yeah, I mean if you're gonna establish some being that exists beyond time with this awesome power, how else is he going to beat him than the way we show?
