Government forces slow rebel assault on Aleppo

Syrian opposition fighters continued their shelling of government-controlled areas of the city, killing at least seven people, including three children, state TV reported. It said the militants used a total number of 20 poison gas canisters and 50 Grad rockets and ignited 48 fires in their three-day long offensive on civilians in Aleppo.

The UN special envoy for Syria says he is "appalled and shocked" that rebels in western Aleppo are targeting civilians in the city.

"Russian and Syrian aircraft have not carried out any flights over the city of Aleppo in 13 days", said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov today, reported Sputnik.

The head of Aleppo University Hospital, Ibrahim Hadid, told state television "36 people, including civilians and combatants, were wounded after inhaling toxic chlorine gas released by terrorists".

President Vladimir Putin is set to launch a huge military assault on the Syrian city of Aleppo, exploiting a political lull in Washington during the presidential election.

Meanwhile, the Russian and Syrian Air Forces continue to observe a no-fly-zone over Aleppo, staying at least 10km from the city.

Syrian rebels have intensified attacks on western Aleppo to try to break the regime's siege of opposition-held eastern Aleppo, which has been choked off from food, fuel and other necessities.

"The goal of breaking the siege on eastern Aleppo does not give armed opposition groups a license to flout the rules of worldwide humanitarian law by bombarding civilian neighborhoods in government-held areas without distinction", Samah Hadid of Amnesty global said.

In a statement on Sunday, de Mistura said that trusted reports from sources on the grand show that dozens of civilians were killed in western Aleppo, including children, and hundreds more were killed by brutal and indiscriminate attacks by "armed opposition" groups.

"The momentum of the rebel offensive slowed after failing to take control of the "3000" apartment block and the military complex," a pro-regime military source said, referring to two built-up areas southwest of Aleppo.

October 30, 2016 (EIRNS)-The Russian Defense Ministry is posting daily reports of the escalation by jihadi rebels in Syria, while also announcing the Russian/Syrian governments cessation of air strikes in Aleppo continued for its 13th day.

Amnesty International has condemned the "indiscriminate attacks" on civilian areas by the armed opposition.
