Lewis Hamilton knows revival may have come too late

Sebastian Vettel

The Austrian told reporters after triple world champion Hamilton had won the race that it had been touch and go whether to bring the Briton into the pits when he damaged his tyres at the start.

"I don't know how many times he is using very bad language", said the teenager.

This allowed the British three-time champion to move to 330 points in the drivers' championship, 19 behind Rosberg on 349.

For Rosberg, second could yet be enough as he bids to emulate his father Keke, the 1982 world champion, and win the title.

With Rosberg forced to fight for second, Hamilton had no problems coasting to his eighth win of the season and second in a row.

"Sounds good", Rosberg said.

Indeed Rosberg will now secure his maiden title if he wins the Brazilian Grand Prix in a fortnight's time. I haven't been too fast this weekend so I have to accept second.

Hamilton, after a sluggish first phase to his launch from his 10th pole position of the season, pulled clear to lead the 900-metres run down to Turn one where he locked up heavily, creating a flat spot on a tyre, and ran off circuit.

Meanwhile, Hamilton's win was the 51st of his career, moving him equal-second with France's Alain Prost - but still 40 behind Michael Schumacher's record mark.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel finished third after Red Bull's Max Verstappen was penalized 5 seconds after the race for leaving the track and gaining the advantage.

The German also moved up to third but Ricciardo was adamant Vettel should have also received a sanction.

Vettel was livid at the end of the race about the incident, pulling up alongside Verstappen after delivering a foul-mouthed spray over the the team radio about the 19-year-old. That would have been the only other place for Rosberg to make up a few seconds to catch Hamilton, a possible issue with Hamilton's stop, which was the 2.09. Verstappen responded by shaking his fist.

Daniel Ricciardo says Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel stole a podium place off him after finishing fourth in the Mexican Grand Prix.

Vettel was thus promoted to the podium.

But Vettel's smiles wouldn't last. You don't bang wheels with the championship leader three races from the end (of the season).

It was Ricciardo who, therefore, took third place, though he was unhappy at how Hamilton had escaped punishment for cutting the chicane in the same way that Verstappen had. "Everyone's complaining that Max is doing it and Seb did it with me today". "He doesn't deserve to be on the podium". Both Mercedes drivers got decent starts, though, and the horsepower advantage took over for them as they beat the rest of the field into turn one after the long start-finish straight.
