Patriots trade Southern Miss' Jamie Collins

Giants offensive lineman Ereck Flowers

The outside linebacker spot has been thin in Cleveland since Paul Kruger was released during the preseason and Nate Orchard went on injured reserve early in the season. The Browns can lock down Collins before he hits the market and potentially save some coin on the deal by negotiating ahead of time.

There is risk involved for Cleveland.

Collins, 27, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2016 season. The Browns (0-8) would have the option of using the franchise tag on Collins. So right off the bat, we'll get a "Thanks Baalke" out of the way.

"I think it is where his comfort level is, what is most important and then we will kind of work around that", Jackson said. No one on the roster can mirror the unique athletic skill set that he brought to the table.

"And so I think this defense has really been a liability, and I think what Bill's statement today to the team is that we're not going to tolerate it".

Collins was on the field for just 62 percent of the Patriots' defensive snaps against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. This year, they surprisingly sold, sending linebacker Jamie Collins to the Browns for a conditional draft pick.

And the third round pick isn't even the Browns' high choice.

Barkevious Mingo (6-4, 240): With a long-and-lean build and speed to spare, Mingo has been a key special tearmer for the Patriots since his arrival just before the start of the regular season.

Through the first eight games, Collins has a combined 43 tackles, two interceptions and one sack.

Linebacker Jamie Collins was reportedly looking for "Von Miller" type of money from the New England Patriots as he heads toward the end of his contract after this season. The rush defense is now ranked 31st and the pass defense is 25th. He had two quarterback hits yesterday, but he also missed a run gap on Mike Gillislee's 28-yard run on the second play of the game and got run through on Gillislee's 3-yard touchdown. "There's several things he can do".

The leader in the clubhouse to fill the void left by Collins is rookie Elandon Roberts. "He's going to be a free agent at the end of the year".

But Jones was also perceived as a distraction in New England after the odd incident at the Foxborough Police Station, where Jones arrived shirtless and surrendered himself, seemingly for no reason.

So while the public perception of Collins is of a top linebacker in the National Football League, that line of thinking didn't seem to be shared by Belichick and parts of his coaching staff and ultimately led to Monday's trade.
