A 7.0 magnitude quake off El Salvador's Pacific Coast has prompted warnings of tsunami waves from USA monitoring agencies.

Tsunami waves are possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre, the tsunami warning said. Hurricane Otto made landfall as a unsafe Category 2 hurricane on a sparsely populated stretch of Caribbean coast in Nicaragua today, becoming the southernmost hurricane on record to hit Central America.
