Comanche County has had 37 hospitalizations and zero flu deaths so far this year.

Despite the relatively mild winter, the flu has been an issue across the state, with the Ohio Department of Health reporting 742 new confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations in the last week, up from the 576 new hospitalizations reported the week before.

Officials say the elderly are most vulnerable to the flu, with seven of the eight victims this season age 70 or older.

During the following season (2013-2014), when H1N1 viruses dominated and the standard-dose vaccine had better effectiveness than the previous season, the high-dose vaccine was not significantly better at preventing deaths among the Medicare patients studied.

Overall, there have been 39 reported deaths of individuals age 65 and older, 14 in the 55-to-64 age group, five each in the 25-to-54 age group, three in the 5-to-17 age groups, and one each in the 18-to-24 age group and the birth to 4 age group.

"It's not possible to predict the severity of a flu season or whether it will commence early", he said in a statement.
