Russian Federation responsible 'by proxy' for suspected Syrian chemical attack: United Kingdom minister

Sir Michael, writing in the Sunday Times, said the Kremlin was responsible "by proxy" as the "principal backer" of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The retaliatory United States cruise missile strikes on Friday on a Syrian airbase were "understandable", Gabriel commented.

The United States will "definitely consider" further action against the Syrian government if there is a repeat of last Tuesday's chemical attack which killed more than 80 innocent civilians, the White House has said.

Taken together, the comments of Haley and Tillerson suggested senior members of Trump's foreign policy team may be seeking to shape the president's views, with Haley more opposed than Tillerson to Assad remaining in power.

President Trump had spoken out during his election campaign against USA military intervention, and had been keen to fix relations with Russian Federation, whose president Vladimir Putin backs the Assad regime.

After the USA attacked a Syrian airbase with cruise missiles in response to the chemical attack, both Russian Federation and Iran said they will "respond with force" if there were further US strikes targeting the Assad regime.

However, "whether Russian Federation was complicit here or whether they were simply incompetent or whether they got outwitted" by the Syrian government, they had "failed in their commitment to the global community", he said. Assad's eventual fate, he said, "is something that we will be working [on] with allies and others in the coalition".

The official also said that the United States bombing was meant to send a message to the Syrian regime that any use of chemical weapon will not be tolerated by the US.

Johnson on Saturday called off a visit to Moscow in the wake of the "Syrian chemical weapons attack".

Russian Federation had agreed to ensure Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles were destroyed - and its failure to do this enabled the attack, he said.

Meanwhile, the Russian government has condemned missile strikes by the USA on a Syrian airbase, calling Washington's move as "aggression against sovereign state in violation of worldwide law".

He said the USA is hopeful it can help bring parties together to begin the process of hammering out a political solution.

Britain has fully supported the U.S. for its response to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Idlib province of Syria that left almost 80 civilians dead.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani said American military intervention in Syria was a "violation of global law" in telephone talks, said the Kremlin on Sunday.
