Russian Federation blocks condemnation of gas attack

CNN uses anonymous source to push Syria Russia 'chemical attack' conspiracy

Russian Federation says rebels were responsible for whatever chemical agent was found, which the Trump administration calls a disinformation campaign.

But despite the growing rifts, some general compromises were discussed.

Trump said the U.S. is "not getting along with Russian Federation at all" and relations between the two global powers are at an "all-time low". "The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship", Tillerson told a Moscow news conference. Tillerson said both nations would set up a "working group" to seek ways to ease tensions.

Both Syria and Russian Federation, a longtime ally of Assad in the nation's ongoing civil war, have denied involvement in the chemical strike and have sought to place blame for the attack on terrorist groups in the region looking to spur USA military action against Assad.

Lavrov retorted: "This is obviously the subject where our views differ".

"The Russians really became the guarantor for Assad's behaviour in regards to chemical weapons and the guarantor for Assad's promise that he had given them all up", Jessica Ashooh of the Atlantic Council, a foreign policy think-tank in Washington, DC, told Al Jazeera.

He said that Russian Federation hopes the United States can give constructive response to this suggestion.

At the opening meeting, Tillerson - looking directly at Lavrov - acknowledged what he called "sharp differences" between the two countries.

Mr. Putin is now the most influential figure in the bloody struggle for Syria, the only foreign leader who might be able to force to accept a negotiated end to the conflict.

"Definitely, 100 percent for us, it s fabrication", he said in the interview on Wednesday of the alleged chemical weapons attack. "This is simply counterproductive", ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in remarks aired on the Internet news site TVDozhd.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said a suspected chemical weapons attack was a "fabrication" to justify a United States military strike, as Moscow digs in to defend its ally despite increasing strains with Washington.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Friday called the recent United States missile attack against Syria unacceptable, media reports said.

"Right now we're not getting along with Russian Federation at all", Trump said at a White House press conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. "I think it's probably unlikely", he said. "It's very bad for this world", Trump told Fox Business News.

He added: "Putin is the leader of Russian Federation".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made it clear on Wednesday that the United States will not support the continued rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Given the strained relationship between the Trump administration and intelligence agencies, he's not sure where the evidence came from.

Until the chemical attack, the Trump administration had sought to step back from the US position that Assad should leave power.

A fact-finding mission from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is investigating the attack.

United Nations Security Council members show hands for a vote on a resolution condemning Syria's use of chemical weapons at U.N. headquarters on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.
