Trump advisers to meet Tuesday to discuss Paris climate agreement

Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt left shakes hands with coal miners during a visit to Consol Pennsylvania Coal Company's Harvey Mine in Sycamore Pa. Thursday

The Paris agreement itself is really an array of individual, country-specific pledges, such as the US promise to cut greenhouse gas emissions at least 26 percent from 2005 levels by 2025.

But in a November interview with The New York Times, Trump said he was still developing a position on the Paris agreement.

Among Pruitt's proposals are repealing the Clean Water Rule, which protects tributaries, along with more than half of US streams, Rumpler noted.

Environmental groups want Washington to remain in the Paris agreement, even if the new administration weakens US pledges.

Trump's team will reportedly meet to discuss whether to exit the Paris Agreement.

One of the most fervent voices pushing the Trump administration to withdraw from the Paris agreement, however, has been the conservative Heritage Foundation. "If Trump allows this deal to go forward, he will unwittingly fulfil Hillary Clinton's arrogant and dastardly promise to put every coal miner in America out of a job".

Trump is expected to make a final decision on Paris by late May, when he and other world leaders will travel to Italy for a G7 summit.

"That may be a winning strategy for the executives at Exxon and other companies, but not for the USA economy as a whole", Pyle said. Now that the agreement has entered into force, it takes three years under its terms for a party to withdraw, followed by a one-year waiting period - a length roughly equal to Trump's first term in office.

Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt said Thursday during an appearance on Fox and Friendsthat the United States should exit the Paris climate agreement because the accord only serves the interests of Europe, China and India. In light of the recent actions, what previous policies will remain and what will change? The White House did not confirm on Monday that the meeting would happen.

Some argue not pulling out the Paris agreement would be largely symbolic, since Trump's already begun to roll back Obama-era regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Multi-national corporations, like Exxon, want to avoid diplomatic blowback and no doubt see it as a boon to their natural gas holdings.

On Monday, liquified natural gas exporter Cheniere Energy sent a letter to George David Banks, who handles worldwide energy issues at the NEC, to recommend remaining in the Paris agreement so "the United States can leverage competitive advantages in natural gas and energy technology".

The Trump administration is changing course from the policies of his predecessor in a number of stark ways, perhaps most drastically when it comes to climate change. Some coal companies and Republicans believe Obama's Paris pledge can be substituted with subsidies emissions control technology.
