Ex-NFL star Hernandez found dead in prison cell

"Those who love and care about him are heartbroken and determined to find the truth surrounding his untimely death".

Officials said he hanged himself using a bed sheet that he had tied to his cell window.

Since the prison opened in 1998, Souza-Baranowski has had a speckled history of violence, including attacks on prison staff and inmates.

Although Hernandez's family has not released a statement about his death, sources told Byron Barnett over at WHDH that Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez spoke with Aaron last night, and "everything seemed fine". One of his defense attorneys, George Leontire, says Hernandez was very grateful towards his defense team.

Hernandez was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2013 death of Odin Lloyd.

"When a criminal defendant dies during an appeal, the normal process is for the appeal to be dismissed, and the judgment of the trial court to be vacated, and the indictment to be vacated". However, the department said the investigation is ongoing.

Hernandez hanged himself with his bedsheet, authorities said.

Police claimed Hernandez arranged Lloyd's murder with help from accomplices after Lloyd spoke with people Hernandez didn't like at a Boston bar.

Hernandez's death comes on the same day that President Donald Trump will host his former team the Patriots - which won the premier American football championship, the Superbowl, in early February - at the White House.

"We will never know", Porter said on if the Patriots visit influenced the timing of Hernandez's death. He was now serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd, but the recent acquittal was believed to be crucial for Hernandez's appeal in the Lloyd case.

Hernandez was also accused of fatally shooting two men in Boston in 2012 after an apparent altercation at a nightclub.

Aaron Hernandez's attorney is questioning whether or not the former National Football League star committed suicide or was murdered after prison officials said he was found hanging in his cell earlier this morning.

Fallon said he was not aware of any suicide note and officials had no reason to believe Hernandez was suicidal.

The department said the former NFLer was in a single cell in a general population unit. He was already sentenced to life, why not commit suicide right after he was sentenced?
