Suspect in Fresno triple-shooting had criminal history in Sacramento

Fresno police members walk near a shooting scene Tuesday

At the scene of the shooting, Muhammad confessed to the first police officer at the scene "I did it".

Hours before the shootings, police had issued a news release saying Muhammad, who was suspected in the shooting death of a white security guard last week, was armed and risky.

Police in Fresno, California revealed new details Wednesday on the "hate crime" shooting that killed three people in just minutes on Tuesday morning and what allegedly inspired the suspect to commit the murders.

He told detectives: "White people are responsible for keeping the black people down".

Then the 6-foot-1-inch, 220-pound Muhammad ran behind the motel and climbed onto the roof of a nearby 7-Eleven, where he hid out that night.

Dyer says Muhammad went with officers to the Motel 6, where he is accused of killing unarmed security guard Carl Williams. They had published a photo of Muhammad, asked for the public's help in finding him and offered a reward. The suspect lead detectives through the murder scenes and explained to investigators what he did and why, laughing while he made the descriptions, Dyer said. The man fell to the ground, and Muhammad thought he'd killed him.

"As he spoke about the shooting and shooting individuals, he did so in a very callous manner", Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said. He re-iterated that Muhammad says he was motivated by a hatred of white men and not religion.

"He told her not to cry, he is still alive, and his magic was powerful, and he started laughing", Dyer said.

A coroner has released the names of three men gunned down during a shooting rampage in Fresno. Another 59-year-old white man was shot at but not struck.

Officers found Muhammad running on the street after shooting his last victim.

Following the shooting, Fresno city spokesman Mark Standriff said county offices were placed on lockdown, and people were urged to shelter in place. Wright says he expects the arraignment will be scheduled for Friday.

After killing Jackson, Dyer said Muhammad kept going south until encountering a Hispanic man near Voorman Avenue.

Dyer says police have called the FBI to assist in the investigation.

The first victim has been identified as Zackary Randalls, 34, who was shot dead while riding in the passenger's seat of a Pacific Gas & Electric truck. The driver sped away and drove to Fresno Police headquarters.

On Monday he wrote to Facebook "MY KILL RATE INCRESASES TREMENDOUSLY ON THE OTHER SIDE ASÈ ALLAH U AKBAR".

Court records show Muhammad also was arrested in Washington state in 2004 after acknowledging he shot a gun outside his apartment.

Valencia called Randalls "one of the wittiest people he's ever known", saying the two loved to laugh.

The Associated Press came under fire Tuesday for a tweet that inaccurately implied a shooter in Fresno, California shouted "God is great" in English.

Monique Skinner tells The Fresno Bee (http://bit.ly/2osozFS ) that she was outside her apartment when she flipped the victim over and he gasped and died.

"The gunman reloaded at a bus stop and then killed a man in the parking lot of Catholic Charities in the 100 block of North Fulton, he said".

Police later Tuesday arrested 39-year-old Kori Ali Muhammad.

The gunman also approached two Latina women, a mother and daughter, in a vehicle.

Dyer believes that race was the motivation behind the killings on Tuesday as well as Williams.

In 2005, after being indicted on drug charges in Fresno, Muhammad was ultimately ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial, as the LA Times reports. This was a random act of violence.
