Ryan Palmer, a West Texas native also handled the winds as strong as 25 miles per hour well to shoot four-under 68. It was just the fifth round of the 2016-17 PGA Tour season in which every player had at least one bogey.

Laird finished his day with a wonderful birdie on the par-5 18th hole. Cauley bogeyed the first hole, and his co-leader Finau parred until bogey at No. 7 and a double bogey on the next hole after he was chipping for birdie from right in front of the green.

Chappell, 30, flirted with trouble on the 18th when his second shot rolled next to a brook, but he had enough room for a full swing and reached the green to set up a two-putt par.

"That was brutal", Grace said.

With this win, you just have to control the spin, you know. It's nice for Kevin to get his first win. That always tends to put me at ease.

Chappell, equal seventh at the Masters two weeks ago, will jump into the top 25 in the world rankings, after starting the Texas Open ranked 41st.

"It's huge, after the start I've had and the struggles I was going through", Palmer said.

What it means: After holding a share of the 54-hole lead on three prior occasions without getting the job done, Chappell carried a one-shot advantage into the final round and managed to close it out, albeit in dramatic fashion. "Obviously, the golf course hit me in the chin real hard early".

"I feel like I've made some strides mentally and physically".

Chappell will be hoping for a solid start when the final round gets underway and the overnight leader spoke about his delight at being able to turn his performance on Saturday around.

Davis Love III and Scott Verplank birdied their final four holes to finish at 6 under and in a tie for second place along with Fred Couples and Jay Haas. He left his putt from 42 feet well short and missed the 9-foot par putt he had remaining.

Australian golfer Cameron Smith is two shots off the lead going into the final round of the US PGA Tour's Texas Open.

Sunday is set up for a frenetic finish with 26 players now within five shots of the lead.

Wiesberger's 71 featured par saves on the 12th and 17th and almost hit the pin with his approach to the last hole but was forced to settle for a par and a trip back up the 18th.
