For second time this week, Trump jabs at Canada over trade

Canada said Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump's charge that it is milking American dairy farmers through unfair trade practices is not based in fact.

Trade of dairy products is not included in the current NAFTA agreement between the United States and Canada, but Stephenson said it could be added under a renegotiation.

Tensions have continued to rise between farmers and politicians in the United States and Canada since Grassland in Greenwood, Wisconsin, blamed the Canadian policy change for forcing them to cut ties with dairy farmers earlier this month.

Canada protects its dairy industry with high tariffs on imports and controls domestic production as a means of supporting dairy prices.

Canada recently changed its policy on pricing its domestic milk to cover more dairy ingredients, leading to lower prices for Canadian products including ultra-filtered milk that compete with the USA product.

"I wasn't going to do this", he said, but referring to his trip to Wisconsin this week, Mr. Trump said that what Canada had done to US dairy farm workers was a "disgrace".

Trudeau said he wants to have a fact-based conversation with the Americans, noting the US - like other countries - subsidizes its dairy and agriculture industries to the tune of hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars.

Without going into much detail, Trump promised that in the coming weeks his administration will be planning to hit the negotiating table with Canada and Mexico to correct trade policies in three areas: energy, dairy and lumber. He stood by his own system, by saying every country subsidizes agriculture.

"It is an unwise policy that violates our agreements and hurts our farmers, and we agreed to work together to immediately address the issue", Schumer said of his conversation with Trump.

The US dairy industry says that agreement led to Wisconsin and NY companies losing millions of dollars in ultra-filtered milk exports due to a drop in demand for the ingredients from Canada.

Mr. Trump has previously raised questions about U.S.

"Wanted to milk cows instead of going to school when I was 5 years old, but mom and dad forced me", Von Ruden said. Canada carries a near $16 billion surplus when it comes to the exchange of goods from the forestry & logging, wood product manufacturing and paper manufacturing industries, according to data obtained from Statistics Canada and the U.S. Census Bureau.

About 70 dairy producers in both Wisconsin and NY are affected by the decision. "It's a disgrace", he said.

But Easter noted that the US has a lot invested in trade with Canada.

Ironically, one of Trump's guests in his office for the signing ceremony was the head of the United Steelworkers union - Leo Gerard, a Canadian, from Sudbury, Ont. He also criticized recent pricing changes for dairy ingredients in Canada for making US imports less competitive and costing Americans revenue and jobs.
