Turkey hits Kurdish areas in Iraq's Sinjar and north-east Syria

Turkish jets hit PKK targets in Iraq northeast Syria

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) has carried out airstrikes against PKK terrorists near northern Iraq's Sinjar Mountain and areas in Kara├žok Mountain in northeastern Syria, according to a statement released by the Turkish General Staff on Tuesday.

The targeted regions have become "terror hubs" for the PKK, which were used as an ammunition and terrorist source for PKK attacks within Turkey, the statement added.

"Turkish planes carried out a broad offensive on a YPG base that houses media and communication centres and some military installations", the YPG statement said.

The military said the attacks centered on Mount Sinjar in Iraq and Mount Karakoc in Syria, south of Turkey's shared borders with both countries.

The PKK established a presence in Sinjar after coming to the aid of the region's Yazidi population when Islamic State militants overran the area and purged its Yazidi population in the summer of 2014.

The strike on Karacok in Syria was confirmed by YPG, a Kurdish militant group that Turkey says is an extension of the PKK.

PKK is considered a terrorist organization not only by Turkey but also the US and the European Union. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

In November, the Turkish army deployed tanks and armored vehicles to the border town of Silopi, around the time Iraqi forces supported by the United States launched an operation to drive Islamic State from the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
