FCC Chairman Expected to Outline Net Neutrality Plans on Wednesday

Report: FCC Chairman Ajit Pai Meets With Tech Firms to Seek Feedback on Net Neutrality Rules

The battle over net neutrality is heating up. From dismantling online privacy protections to enabling broadband and cable monopolies to continue overcharging consumers about $50 a month, every action Chairman Pai has taken has been in the name of industry consolidation, giving these monopolies new opportunities to raise prices and discriminate against competitors.

Broadband providers and Republican lawmakers have opposed the rules, saying the reclassification adds unnecessary regulation that deters deployment and other investment in their networks. In a Wednesday speech, Pai will reportedly announce that he is scheduling a vote for the FCC's May 18 meeting to begin the process of repealing the rules.

Pai was an opponent of the FCC's increasing control over Internet service providers and led the charge against net neutrality rules ahead of his tenure as FCC chairman but still said he backs a "free and open internet," just under a different regulatory structure.

According to sources cited by Reuters, Pai is set to voice out his opposition on the subject once more.

Pai did not give a specific date but said it will be for Class C and D stations, and the necessary IT work is being done now and it's going well. "There's common ground here and there's room for an agreement here", Pai told reporters at a press conference on Thursday.

In his latest move to relax regulation of the telecom industry, Pai will use a speech in Washington to repeat his opposition to the FCC's existing approach, which subjects the likes of AT&T, Charter, Comcast* and Verizon to old telephone utility rules to ensure they aren't blocking or slowing web traffic.

At the time, Pai also hinted that the FCC would look into raising the media ownership limit.

"The rigid rules that now govern Internet providers forbid an array of business models that could benefit consumers", Ryan Radia, a research fellow at the pro-business Competitive Enterprise Institute, said in a statement.

Fortunately, in 2015 the Federal Communications Commission put in place light touch net neutrality rules that not only prohibit certain harmful practices, but also allow the Commission to develop and enforce rules to address new forms of discrimination.
