Sonny Perdue sworn in as USA agriculture secretary

Sonny Perdue

But just like America's farmers and ranchers, I know Secretary Perdue isn't afraid of a hard day's work.

Perdue's late nomination back in January-in addition to the 3-month confirmation wait-has prompted some to say that all matters concerning rural farming and food safety in the USA are not a priority for President Trump.

The former governor of Georgia succeeds Tom Vilsack, who led the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the past eight years and who endorsed Perdue as his successor once the former Georgia governor was nominated by President Trump. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, and after that career, he became a successful small business owner, concentrating in agri-business and transportation, according to the Georgia state website. Georgia Sen. David Perdue, a cousin, voted present. To calm them down, he assured them he will advocate for rural America and he promised to reach out to Democrats. With his expected swearing in today, Perdue takes the helm of a 100,000-person agency responsible for massive federal programs related to food, farming, bioenergy, conservation, rural development and more.

Democrats surely think so.

Others at the roundtable included Iowa Secretary of Agriculture and farmer Bill Northey, NC Commissioner of Agriculture and farmer Steve Troxler and former California Secretary of Agriculture and farmer A.G. Kawamura. At a time when many farmers are facing challenges with low commodity prices and competitive overseas markets, Secretary Perdue's leadership at USDA will be critical.

All this comes as Trump tries to crack down on illegal immigration to the United States, an issue that could leave many farms short-staffed due to their reliance on foreign - and sometimes, undocumented - workers. Over the coming year, Purdue's main task will be working with lawmakers on the next five-year farm bill. The current measure expires in 2018. Trump has also proposed slashing USDA programs, a move likely to bring him into open conflict with farmers.

"With farm bill, budget and trade talks underway, Secretary Perdue will provide a voice for America's farmers and ranchers. Perdue will do his best to fulfill these responsibilities by listening to farmers and families in IN and our country".

During his confirmation hearings, Perdue told concerned senators that he supports numerous programs that could be cut by Trump's budget, particularly those that focus on agricultural research and rural infrastructure development.

Clements: Perdue told USDA employees Tuesday that trade will be a top priority of the department. Robert Lighthizer, Trump's nominee for USA trade representative, and Alexander Acosta, nominated to head the Labor Department, still await confirmation.

Perdue will also be part of the administration's response to a dispute with Canada's dairy industry, which has a new lower-priced classification of milk product that Trump says is harming US producers in dairy states like Wisconsin and NY.
