Uber plans to carry out the first flying auto tests by 2020

The past few months have been tough on Uber, with CEO Travis Kalanick recently having to deflect questions about his own leadership, particularly in the wake of news that the ride-sharing service's app was almost banned from iOS devices.

An Uber spokesman said that over time it was highly likely that the vehicles would become autonomous, although the company expects initial operations will require pilots.

The multibillion-dollar company is already detailing its aircraft capabilities - basically, quiet and capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) - and has worked up a drawing of theoretical landing pads in Dallas. At the Uber Elevate summit today, Uber's chief product officer Jeff Holden gave a keynote speech in which he provided more details about the company's aggressive plan to introduce flying vehicles to the world. Partnering with two companies with ties to Chinese companies, Mooney and Pipistrel, could hint that Uber is trying to make a renewed push in China after failing to grow its vehicle network in the country. Additionally, it has also partnered with ChargePoint, an United States electric vehicle charging station maker, to develop an exclusive charger for its network.

For now, Uber is not looking to manufacture the vehicles but partner with other "experienced aircraft manufacturers" to work on them.

Uber has been reeling from executive departures and accusations of sexual harassment at its workplace. Uber has an agreement with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority, including a joint study into pricing, routes, and people movement.

The ride-share service first announced its interest in flying vehicles last October.

Chief Executive Officer Larry Page funded at least two flying vehicle projects. We are working on the certification process and have set up a committee. The company that changed the taxi industry for only a couple of years plans to deploy its first flying taxis (no, not a joke) by the end of the decade.

"At present, we are doing a trial run". The key to accomplishing this goal, according to the white paper, is to build "a network of small, electric aircraft that take off and land vertically".
