Nintendo announces sky-high March Switch sales and full-year forecast

In total, 2.76 million copies of the game were sold for Switch (plus a further 1.08 million copies on Wii U, making a total of 3.84 million copies sold). Lifetime sales of the Wii U are a paltry 13.56 million units, versus 101.63 million Wii sales date. But if Nintendo comes through on its first-year expectations, the Switch will have sold nearly as many consoles in one year as the Wii U has over five years. Since its launch, the Switch has shipped 2.74 million units worldwide, along with shipping 5.46 million games.

Based on the hype around the console, initial reviews and the fact that some are calling the new Zelda game the greatest game ever created, the Nintendo Switch appears to be in a very solid position right now.

Add the sales of the game on Wii U and it sold 3.84 million copies in total, cementing its status as the most successful launch title in Nintendo's history. But I believe Nintendo's gamble of releasing the Switch in March has paid off; it will generate impressive sales throughout 2017 with a massive spike during Q4 in the run up to Christmas.

EA will release a scaled down version of Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 for the Nintendo Switch, but games like Star Wars: Battlefront 2 won't be coming to the console. A result in line with its expectations would be a good improvement over the Yen29.4 billion profit for the year that ended March 31, which Nintendo also reported Thursday. Earlier this month market research firm NPD group announced that the Japanese game maker had sold 906,000 units of the device. The company said the 3DS handheld console, which was released in 2011, saw a 7 percent year-on-year rise in sales.

It also expects to shift another 6m 3DS consoles, and 40m 3DS games. Doing this will net you 20% off select Nintendo Switch games.

Some other notes from Nintendo's earnings report is that Amiibo sales were described as "limited", coming in at 9.1 million figure units and 9.3 million card-types.

The projected Yen65 billion operating profit, if realized, would be the highest since the year ending March 2011. Software sales were also strong, selling over 55 million copies of 3DS games, which is a 14% increase over the previous year.
