Nintendo Shipped 2.74M Switch Units, Forecasts 10M for Next Fiscal Year

An additional 10 million Switch sales make up the company's forecast for the following year, a number which puts the Switch on comparable footing to first-year performances from the PlayStation 4 (14.4m) and Xbox One (10m.) in 2013/14. That's only five times the amount of Switch machines sold already. Nintendo has sold 2.76 million copies of Breath of the Wild for the Switch-which astute readers will notice is more than one copy per Switch.

It's believed that the game shifted more copies than its console as a result of people either buying a collector's edition ahead of the Switch's launch, or due to people buying copies of both the Switch and Wii U versions of the game.

On the portable front, 3DS game sales were strong, Nintendo said, specifically calling out Pokemon Sun and Moon, which have now combined to sell 15.44 million units.

The official numbers were released alongside Nintendo's full year financial report, which shows profits are up at the Japanese console maker.

Nintendo Switch sales figures have been revealed during the company's latest earnings report.

Profit from a new console typically peaks a couple of years after launch when there is a wide choice of game titles.

Coming to the 3DS, game sales were still very strong with a stunning total of 55.08 million 3DS games sold. In the next financial year, however, Nintendo expects zero Wii U hardware sales - after all, it's now ceased production.

Nintendo CEO said repeatedly there are "more unannounced titles" that should boost Switch itself's sales.

During the previous fiscal year, which ended last month, Nintendo earned Yen24.3 billion from smartphone games, including "Super Mario Run" and "Fire Emblem Heroes", a game especially popular among hard-core, long-term fans. Furthermore, we expect the Switch tie ratio will be higher than in the Wii period.

Nintendo reported net sales of ¥489.1 billion, beating the company's own guidance, and net profit of ¥102.6 billion, representing a 10.7% year-over-year drop, but beating analysts' estimates of ¥93.6 billion. Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima also went on record earlier this year as stating that if comfort issues with prolonged play are resolved for VR, then the company "will do it". Contrast with the current fiscal year's operating profit of 29.4 billion yen.

As announced in the European Nintendo Direct, Dr. Kawashima's Devilish Brain Training is finally listed with a release date (28 July) for the region.
