Hackers might have stolen unreleased movie from Disney

Bob Iger

Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger on Monday revealed that hackers claim to have accessed one of the company's upcoming movies.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the news during a meeting in NY on Monday, explaining that the culprits are insisting they will release bits of the film - in increments - if their demands aren't met.

The hackers have threatened to release the first five minutes of the film and subsequently in 20-minute chunks until the ransom is paid, The Hollywood Reporter says.

The Disney theft comes just weeks after a hacker claimed to have stolen several episodes of Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black" and release them if the streaming service didn't pay a ransom.

Although both films are expected to do well for Disney, their profits are likely to be dwarfed by another film on the company's slate - Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which hits theatres on December 15.

The film in question is believed to be Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mean Tell No Tales, according to Deadline. But a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to comment said the movie that was hacked was the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequel.

It's unclear whether the two incidents are connected. The hackers are saying that they will release bits of the movie should their demands not be met, so presumably unless the Federal Bureau of Investigation can get the movie back in time, we should have confirmation pretty soon. They then made a decision to release the next nine episodes "after many lengthy discussions at the office where alcohol was present, " according to a press release from the hackers obtained by Heavy.
