Mom out with daughter on Mother's Day killed by car

Her daughter and the 80-year-old driver were hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries.

Tragedy struck the Aluska family on Mother's Day in Lindenhurst, N.Y., when an 80-year-old woman, who had backed up her auto and thought she put the vehicle in drive, jumped a curb and pinned 55-year-old Diane Aluska against a wall, killing her.

The owner of the bakery next door on South Wellwood Avenue said his surveillance video, which the family asked not be made public, clearly shows the mothers selfless final act.

Police said Riolo is unlikely to face criminal charges.

When motorist Ann Riolo hit the accelerator to go forward, she instead kept going backward and jumped the curb. She backed into the pedestrians, then hit the Lindenhurst Fire Department building, police said.

"Diane Aluska ... put her hand on her daughter's shoulder and attempted to push her out of the way", Murphy said.

That's when Diane noticed a Toyota Corolla heading veering towards them, and instantly her motherly instincts kicked in.

Witnesses watched Aluska shove her daughter out of the path of the auto, but ended up pinned by the 2005 Toyota Corolla.

The grief-stricken husband said he waited till Monday morning to finally tell his 16-year-old daughter that her mother died saving her because he was anxious about the teen's surgery.

Aluska and her daughter were rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital.

Diane was transferred to a nearby hospital, along with her daughter as well as the elderly driver, where she died shortly after.

"The one that was lying over there on the ground, she was looking for her mother", witness Victoria Fisher said. I had to wait until after her surgery.

Riolo remained at the scene and will probably not be criminally charged, police said.

'It appears to be non-criminal, just a awful accident, ' Sergeant Murphy said.
