"ShadowBrokers" threatens to release more cyber attack tools

Quick-Heal Says India Subject To 48,000 Wanna Cry Attack Attempts Most In West Bengal

"In June, TheShadowBrokers is announcing "TheShadowBrokers Data Dump of the Month" service", the blog post published at steemit.com reads. The data may include exploits for mobile devices, routers, web browsers, Windows 10 and other tools, it says.

In an irregular move, Microsoft skipped its scheduled monthly patch-release day in February before resuming on March 14, at which point the company quietly fixed many vulnerabilities that the Shadow Brokers then released one month later, in April. "More details in June", it promised.

It said future releases could be prevented if the NSA or another "responsible party" bought back the stolen data. The post did not identify other products by name.It also threatened to dump data from banks using the SWIFT worldwide money transfer network and from Russian, Chinese, Iranian or North Korean nuclear and missile programs, without providing further details. It is believed that hacking tools that belong to the NSA were leaked online and were used to build into WannaCry ransomware, also known as WannaCrypt, which has ensnared up to 300,000 computers in more than 150 countries.

Revealing data from SWIFT and nuclear programs in Russia, China, Iran or North Korea could disrupt ongoing NSA operations, according to Nicholas Weaver, a staff cybersecurity researcher writing on LawFare. As is to be expected, the group notes that what members do with the exploits is completely up to them.

"The Equation Group are our nation's top hackers", he says, referring to the group which Shadow Brokers claims to have pilfered a stockpile of exploits and tools.

Despite the availability of fixes, the exploits that the Shadow Brokers still have could lead to even more damage on a global scale.

"TheShadowBrokers is not being interested in stealing grandmothers' retirement money", the group writes in its awkward English.

The group appears to have no qualms regarding the harm that could come from the sale of the stolen data as the subscription service appears to be open to anyone, from tech enthusiasts to terrorist organizations. "Microsoft has been critical of the United States government over this stockpiling of vulnerability code, and said this was equivalent to the government losing it stock of 'Tomahawk missiles". And the hacker group has just resurfaced.

Experts are also looking at whether the "Kill Switch", which was discovered accidentally by a cyber-security expert in England, was intentional.
