Get your beauty sleep or lose your friends

Woman asleep

The findings show beauty sleep is a real thing. And that's not all.

25 Swedish students were studied upon which included 14 women, 11 men- aged 18 to 47 years old, who had their pictures clicked after two consecutive nights of poor quality sleep, just 4.25 hours and also after when they had a proper sleep of about 7.5 hours. They were then required to answer the question, 'How much would you like to socialise with this person in the picture?'

"This study indicates that restricted sleep affects facial appearance negatively and decreases others' willingness to socialize with the sleep-restricted person". A couple of bad nights is enough to make a person look "significantly" more ugly, their sleep experiments suggest. Not only that, but when people were exhausted, they were rated as less attractive and less healthy than when they were well rested. They were asked to get a good night's sleep for two consecutive nights.

Next, the researchers showed the photos to a different set of 122 volunteers they called "raters".

The team, lead by Dr Tina Sundelin, found that strangers were good at assessing how exhausted a person was, and that they rated the sleepy set of photographs as less attractive than the photos of the same people when they were well-rested. These people were asked to rate the subjects on attractiveness, health, sleepiness and trustworthiness.

But lead researcher Dr Tina Sundelin added: "I don't want to worry people or make them lose sleep over these findings". As it turns out, not getting enough sleep made participants score worse on all counts.

"An unhealthy-looking face, whether due to sleep deprivation or otherwise, might activate disease-avoiding mechanisms in others", researchers from Sweden's Karolinska Institute said.

According to the study, this makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. In other words, people don't want to hang around with people who might be ill, whereas someone who looks energetic and fit will hold lots of appeal. These are small tweaks, but they can help you nab more sleep and change how the world perceives you. "This study is a good reminder of how important sleep is to us".

As a result, they were less attractive to potential partners and less likely to be chosen by friends and colleagues to socialise with.
