I never mentioned Israel in meeting with Russians

Speaking from Jerusalem, U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel has a "great opportunity" for peace in the Middle East because "people have just had enough ... of the bloodshed and the killing".

Monday in Israel at the president's brief public appearance with Netanyahu prior to their private meeting, Trump said he did not mention Israel in his meeting with the Russians.

In his remarks, Erekat also warned against relocating the USA embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The teen, who was identified by the Palestinian Maan news agency as a 16-year-old from Bethlehem, approached the Border Police officers at a guard post in eastern Jerusalem on Monday afternoon with the knife drawn and disputed with the officers before being shot, according to the police.

Trump pressed his right hand against the wall and closed his eyes, seemingly in prayer. Israel's subsequent annexation of East Jerusalem is not recognized internationally.

Allowing them to do so could have led to accusations that Washington was implicitly recognising Israel's unilateral claim of sovereignty over the site, which would break with years of United States and worldwide precedent.

The Palestinians, if an independent Palestinian state is created, want to claim east Jerusalem as their capital.

Given the competing claims, the US says the city's fate must be worked out through negotiations and like most countries, it maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem.

The latest controversy stemmed from a dust-up last week between American and Israeli officials planning for Trump's visit.

When Tillerson was asked about any concerns by Israel about the sharing of its intelligence, he said: "To the extent the Israelis have any questions, or clarification, I'm sure we're happy to provide that".

It said that Trump told Lavrov about a specific IS bomb threat. He said the issue would be discussed during Trump's trip.

In a visit fraught with symbolism, President Trump on Monday became the first sitting US president to set foot in the Old City of Jerusalem. "As you know I've been a big supporter of Israel for a long time, I've been a big supporter of yours [Netanyahu]".

Before visiting the Western Wall, Trump toured the nearby Church of the Holy Sepulchre, built at the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.

"This includes a renewed effort at peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians".

It is widely assumed that Israel would retain control over the site under a potential peace deal.

The Wall sits at the base of a plateau which Jews call the Temple Mount and Muslims call the Noble Sanctuary.

It is situated below the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, considered to be Islam's third-holiest site after Mecca and Medina.

The competing claims sometimes spill over into violence, and the USA has withheld recognition of Israeli control of the area until there is a deal. Trump, during his run for the White House, said he would move the US embassy to Jerusalem, but has since backed off that pledge.

The Obama administration at least twice - in 2011 and then again previous year - corrected photo captions and datelines that had read "Jerusalem, Israel" to "Jerusalem", reflecting longstanding executive branch policy that the city should not be described as being in any country until there is a final status agreement. No explanation was given for the dateline.
