North Korea says it will mass-produce ballistic missile

The council on Monday strongly condemned North Korea's "flagrant and provocative defiance" of United Nations sanctions banning ballistic missile tests and again vowed to impose new sanctions in response to its latest launch.

"Viewing the images of earth being sent real-time from the camera mounted on the ballistic missile, Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un said it feels grand to look at earth from the rocket we launched and the entire world looks so lovely", the KCNA reported.

The North has vowed to develop a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead that can strike the mainland United States, saying the programme is necessary to counter U.S. aggression.

With the launch of a mid-range Pukguksong 2 missile on Sunday, North Korea was able to gather "meaningful data in regards to improving the credibility" of its missile program, a defence ministry spokesperson said.

The North has bragged that the missile test was aimed at verifying its capability of carrying "a large-size heavy nuclear warhead". North Korea's media said more missiles will be launched in the future.

He said a new resolution is being negotiated and council members are expected to discuss it during Tuesday's closed consultations.

Under UN resolutions, North Korea is barred from developing nuclear and missile technology.

U.S. Pacific Command said it tracked the missile until it landed into the sea.

North Korea's often-stated goal is to flawless a nuclear warhead that it can put on a missile capable of hitting Washington or other US cities.

The use of solid fuel presents advantages for weapons because it is more stable and can be transported easily allowing for a launch at very short notice from mobile launchers. Local media said it may have been a North Korean drone.

David Wright, an expert on North Korea's missiles and nuclear program with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said the latest missile could have flown farther but was sacked on a "lofted" trajectory, which sends the missile high up so that it will land in the open seas rather than flying over or splashing down near neighboring countries.

SEOUL • South Korea's Unification Ministry said yesterday that it will flexibly review major inter-Korean issues such as civilian exchanges with North Korea.

The second known firing of the Pukguksong-2 on Sunday appeared to confirm that trend.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that a "major, major conflict" with North Korea is possible over its weapons programmes, although U.S. officials say tougher sanctions, not military force, are the preferred option to counter the North Korean threat. Liquid-fuel missiles, on the other hand, are generally fueled at the launch site in a process that can last an hour and requires fueling and other vehicles.

Solid fuel missiles can be fired far more rapidly, dramatically shortening the time available for any attempt to intervene and prevent a launch. That makes them easier to spot and easier to destroy.
