British police name Manchester attacker as Salman Abedi

"It remains the case that other than the terrorist himself, 22 people were killed in the attack, 59 people remain injured and many of them have life-threatening conditions".

Official records show Abedi was registered as living at a house in Fallowfield in southern Manchester, the Associated Press reports. British authorities have identified the suicide bomber as Salman Abedi. The news organization did not elaborate on what brought Abedi to the attention of authorities.

Britain is on critical terror alert with military troops set to bolster police forces amid fears Manchester attacker Salmon Abedi did not act alone. He was the second youngest of four children.

Greater Manchester Police said they arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of links to the attack, while a second man was detained at the city's Arndale shopping centre but was "not now believed to be connected to last night's attacks". Later, police said they had executed two search warrants in and around the city, including at one location where they conducted a "controlled explosion".

British Prime Minister Theresa May called the attack "appalling, sickening cowardice".

Given the target being a Manchester pop concert, the latest attack to hit Europe had echoes of the coordinated attacks in November 2015 by Islamist militants on the Bataclan concert hall and France's national soccer stadium that killed 130 people.

The Islamic State group's claim of responsibility echoed others the extremists have made for attacks in the West but with vague details that left open the possibility it was an opportunistic attempt at propaganda. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it "will only strengthen our resolve to.work with our British friends against those who plan and carry out such inhumane deeds".
