National Football League relaxes rules on celebrations - but no twerking allowed

Sheldon Richardson says the Jets locker room is a happier place without Brandon Marshall

There is no set time limit on how long such celebrations can continue.

In another change, they eliminated the mandatory preseason roster cutdown to 75 players per team.

The roster cut-down period rule change allows teams to have a longer evaluation period of players, and allows those players more of an opportunity to earn one of the final 53-man roster spots.

Some coaches and executives have expressed concern that the reduced overtime would lead to more ties, but the league's competition committee felt there wouldn't be a significant uptick in ties. Of all the rule changes National Football League fans have clamored for over the years, shortening the overtime period ranks very low on that list. If overtime had ended after 10 minutes, there would have been 16 total ties. Before that, a player who went on injured reserve was out for the season. It expands a 2012 rule that allowed teams to bring one player back after he spent eight weeks on IR, as well as a 2016 rule that allowed them to do so without placing a designated-to-return tag on a player right away. In an open letter to fans on the NFL's website, Goodell said the move was made to loosen celebration restrictions that prompted remarks the NFL stood for "No Fun League" after talking to more than 80 current and former players.

But the league isn't getting carried away either - it will still penalize any celebration deemed offensive or in bad taste, including those that embarrass opponents or mimic the use of weapons.

The NFL took steps on Tuesday to change the perception that its initials stand for "No Fun League", as the 32 team owners agreed to relax restrictions on how its players can celebrate touchdowns during a meeting in Chicago.

Examples of celebrations permitted under the new guidelines include using the football as a prop after a touchdown, group demonstrations and celebrating on the ground (like snow angels, for instance).

Yet, even more peculiar than the rule change itself is the reasoning behind it.

Owners also passed a resolution reducing the preseason and regular season overtime from 15 minutes to 10 minutes. Those players that most need to get reps in will now still be on the roster for Week 4 of the preseason.

15 minutes gives both teams ample time to go down the field and hit a field goal to extend the overtime period.

Los Angeles now will host Super Bowl LVI in 2022.

Lastly, referees plan on being more lenient with on-field celebrations than previous years. However, with Lynch now back in the league, and the rules being relaxed, why can't we see this done during a Raiders-Broncos game?
