James Davison to replace Sebastien Bourdais in Indy 500

Sebastien Bourdais was taken by ambulance from the track after he crashed hard into the wall during his third lap in the Indy 500 qualifying round

James Davison will replace Sebastien Bourdais in next Sunday's Indianapolis 500.

Bourdais suffered pelvic injuries and a broken right hip after a horrific crash during Saturday's qualifying session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

According to a statement tweeted by the IndyCar Series, which oversees the annual race, Bourdais was "awake & alert" at the hospital, where his team said late Saturday he will undergo surgery. Three of his four Verizon IndyCar Series starts have come with Dale Coyne Racing, including Davison's 2013 debut at Mid-Ohio and his most recent Indy auto race, the 2015 Indianapolis 500 when he finished 27th.

Dixon, the 2008 Indy 500 victor, was eighth in line to qualify, putting together four laps at 230.333 miles per hour despite sunshine bathing the track.

Away from the drama of Bourdais' crash, which came after a lengthy rain delay, Formula One's Fernando Alonso made it into the Fast Nine. "But, like any family member, our first concern is his health and we are relieved that he looks like he will be okay long-term after what was a awful crash at Indianapolis".

The image was accompanied by the light-hearted caption: "I'm not going to go for a run tomorrow, but I'm up!"

The Spaniard was the first driver to top 231 on all four laps.

"I'll be starting 33rd again, so I look forward to the challenge of securing the best possible job for Sebastien and the team".

Davison has raced in the Indy 500 twice before, finishing in 16th place with KV Racing in 2014 and then coming in 27th place with Dale Coyle Racing in 2015. Bourdais also posted the fastest lap during the Fast Friday event, reaching a top speed of 233.116 miles per hour. "Certainly a good result would be great to pay tribute to Sebastien". He is expected to undergo surgery to fix multiple fractures in his pelvis.

Cars in both groups qualify in reverse order, from slowest to fastest, depending on how they qualified Saturday. Jones has shown some competitive speed already after day one of qualifying, while Mann is looking to take a step forward from the back. "There's a lot to come because numerous things that are happening out there are still very new to me".

Bourdais won four consecutive Champ Car titles from 2004 to 2007 with Newman/Haas Racing.
