Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. However, many point to the post-Civil War Decoration Day as the forerunner of what we now call Memorial Day.

Memorial Day represents a day of national awareness and reverence, honoring Americans who died while defending the nation and its values.

Technically, Decoration Day remained the official name of the holiday until 1968, when an act of Congress confirmed the increasingly widespread use of Memorial Day. They are known as a symbol of remembrance, and it's a tradition to wear them to honor those who died in war.

We encourage you to take advantage of our local holiday offerings, but whether you choose to attend one of these public offerings or just stay at home and have family and friends over for a cookout, remember the reason for this particular holiday. Of course, putting aside one day does not do justice to all those who have bravely fought throughout history.

That doesn't sound all that promising for Memorial Day cookouts, trips down the Ocean, boating trips, dips into nearby pools or any other activity associated with warm, summer days that are supposed to be arriving with the end of May and Memorial Day Weekend.

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, honors service members who have died in all US wars. More Americans were killed than in any previous war. On May 5, 1866, the town's residents organized a community-wide event to pay respects to perished soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags.

Traditions practiced on Memorial Day were born during the Civil War, according to mentalfloss.com. They understand that on Memorial Day, we honor the ideas and values those soldiers stood and died for. This Memorial Day as we get a long weekend, a time with family, a good spot on the riverbank - in all our getting, may we get understanding of the love, sacrifice and devotion of those who left mortality ahead of us. And if you can't make it to the cemetery, take a moment to remember and take a moment of silence at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day. Those things are true, but it's a time to remember those who fight for our freedom. Memorial Day is not a Republican or Democratic issue. Beginning at 10, members will participate in the ceremonies honoring World War II veterans and in other traditional activities commemorating the sacrifices of veterans throughout the years.
