Schapelle Corby to return to Australia 13 years after Bali drugs conviction

Supplied The now-39-year-old Schapelle Corby was convicted of drug smuggling in Indonesia in 2005

SCHAPELLE Corby continues to shy away from the media but has no reservations about Instagram, posting a selfie with sister Mercedes on her new account - which has already attracted more than 40,000 followers.

Schapelle's face was flat and expressionless and she showed no emotion as a parole officer asked if she was excited to be finally going home.

Photos of the convicted criminal unmasked inside the Parole Board office in Denpasar and of her emergency passport issued to enable her deportation were also widely circulated on social media.

She is expected to board a 10pm AEST Virgin flight to Brisbane. "She is not thinking about that at all, she only wants to get on with her life and to be left in peace".

There's been a media frenzy at every step of Schapelle Corby's homecoming - and it appears even her siblings got in on the action.

Police escort Schapelle Corby from the parole office in Denpasar, Bali on Saturday prior to her deportation to Australia. "We do not hate any person, if we don't like a person then we pray for that person, that it won't happen again and they repent".

The Indonesia-Australia relationship was heated up in 2016 after the country executed the convicted drug traffickers Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan.

"We appreciate Schapelle Corby's concern about William's disappearance and using this media opportunity to increase awareness that William is still missing", Where's William? campaign director Clare Collins said.

Drones buzzed overhead as the Polisi vehicles drove past, blue lights flashing, in the narrow Denpasar street.

Police conducted a dry run at the parole offices of what the Corby arrival could look like to ensure she could make a quick entry and exit of the building.

The Corby family played the media like a violin.

Doctor Anak Agung Gede Hartawan was there to conduct a last check of the Australian's health.

"I don't see a security threat for her [Corby] but we are responsible as police, whether there is a threat or not, the police have responsibility for security". There will be Denpasar police who will be responsible for the security of the process.

The family denies that any media deals, for any kind of tell-all interview, have been done, describing reports that they sought $400,000 for an interview as rubbish.

Corby was accompanied by bodyguard to the stars John McLeod, who has provided security for Leonard Cohen, Roger Federer and the Dalai Lama.

While the members of the media eagerly awaited for her to board their plane, Corby and her sister Mercedes were hopping onto a Malindo Air flight at the gate next door. But the celebrations turned to hell when she was arrested at Bali's worldwide airport with 4.2 kilograms of marijuana.

A court sentenced her to 20 years in prison, which was later reduced.

She also became one of the few foreigners in Bali to be allowed to spend three years on parole, after the Balinese husband of her sister Mercedes agreed to act as guarantor.

She wrote: "Big thank you to my Bali family, neighbours and my brother inlaw Wayan".

Surung Pasaribu, chief of the correctional department of the Law and Human Rights Ministry, said the overwhelming response by authorities for Corby was at the behest of the Australian Government in Bali.

Corby will be banned from re-entering Indonesia for six months - a term that could be repeatedly extended depending on requests from authorities. The actions in tthe lead up to her release gave a very strong impression that this was a special case.
