Both Indianapolis 500 drivers in fiery, highflying crash somehow walk away uninjured

The green flag drops for the Indy 500 at 12:21 p.m

Disaster struck on lap 54 of the famous race for Kiwi motorsport ace and pole-sitter Dixon when lapped driver Jay Howard let another auto through but got above the racing line. The crash happened when Howard lost control on lap 53 of the race, with Dixon slamming into him before flying into the air and crashing on top of an inside retaining wall.

The 36-year-old Dixon climbed unassisted from his auto and was basically unharmed despite his Chip Gannasi Honda launching into the air, flipping, crashing into a safety fence and disintegrating at somewhere near 350k/hr.

Thankfully, and unbelievably, racer Scott Dixon was able to walk away from this horrific crash.

"It was definitely a rough ride", Dixon said. You're hoping Jay is going to stay against the wall.

"I just thank God that he's OK and I'm just so happy that he's OK, that's all that really matters", she added.

Mr Dixon took to Twitter to reassure fans of his well-being, tweeting it was a "wild ride". "He texted back and said 'yeah I got hit". But the tub containing Dixon remained intact and he walked away from the crash.

"I lift and let him go, trying to be the nice guy and he moves right over on me and puts me out in the grey and all the marbles".

Some accidents look plain scary as was witnessed during the Indy 500 race on Sunday. "We had a great shot", he told the AP, "We had gotten a little loose but they had dialed it in". That was a wild ride.

Dixon's vehicle ripped the catch fence on the inside of turn two and the race had to be red flagged for about 20 minutes with Fernando Alonso in the lead. "To say I'm disappointed is an understatement".

"You hold on and believe in the safety progress we've made", he said.
