Comey Confirmed, Set to Testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee

Comey set to testify June 8 on Russia

Former FBI Director James Comey is set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, June 8, regarding his firing and the Russian Federation investigation into President Donald Trump's campaign.

The timing of Comey's firing, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation probes possible collusion between Trump's presidential campaign team and Russia's attempts to influence the election, has stirred controversy, even among some members of Trump's party.

The scope of Comey's testimony was not exactly clear, though Mueller was permitting him to speak publicly, an associate told the AP.

The Trump administration fired Comey in May, citing his handling of the Clinton email investigation during the 2016 USA elections. However, the New York Times reported that during one of their interactions, the President asked Mr Comey to end its investigation into Mr Flynn, according to a memo reportedly written by Mr Comey. Comey has reportedly said that Trump tried to dissuade him from pursuing a probe into the president's then-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

The subpoenas asked the agencies to provide details of any requests made by two top Obama administration aides and the former CIA director to "unmask" names of Trump campaign advisers inadvertently picked up in top-secret foreign communications intercepts, congressional sources said.

A spokesman for Mueller declined to comment.

Four were issued to ousted national security adviser Flynn, the president's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and their respective companies.

Trump, a Republican, has denied any collusion between Russian Federation and his campaign and has repeatedly questioned the USA intelligence finding that Putin led an operation that included computer hacking, fake news and propaganda meant to swing the election in his favor.

The committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, said Nunes approved the unmasking subpoenas without consulting the Democrats on the committee.

Trump hired Kasowitz last week in a move that wasn't unusual - former President Bill Clinton hired outside counsel amid the investigation that led to his impeachment trial.

The formal subject of the hearing, slated to begin at 10 a.m., is Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
