World leaders reaffirm commitment to fighting climate change

Amid US doubt, UN chief says climate deal essential, 'get on board'

Mr Trump vowed during his campaign to "cancel" the Paris deal within 100 days of becoming president, as part of an effort to bolster United States oil and coal industries.

Tim Scott signed onto a letter singed by other Republican senators asking Trump to revoke the landmark deal to combat climate change agreed to by nearly 200 nations in the French capital in 2015.

Earlier in the day, Trump said only that he'd been "hearing from a lot of people, both ways".

"We must reduce global warming", the leaders of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden said in a short, joint missive. "The effects are already visible in all parts of our planet".

He could unilaterally withdraw from the Paris agreement without any action by Congress.

They concluded: "We strongly urge you to show global leadership - and to make the right decision".

Trump himself tweeted that "I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days".

A group of top Republican senators including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also urged Trump to withdraw from the agreement.

"China and the European Union. will implement the agreement", a senior European Union official told reporters on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The mayor said he would look to sign the executive order this week, assuming Trump actually does pull out of the climate agreement.

While not mentioning the U.S.by name, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters that climate change is a "global challenge" that no country can ignore.

A voluntarily promise to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to combat climate change was agreed in 2015.

Trump's position on the Paris accord was a focal point of last week's G7 summit in Sicily, at which leaders of the world's six other leading economies pressed him to renew the United States commitment to the deal.

Two major news outlets - Axis and CBS News - reported that the US President had made a decision to withdraw from the climate change agreement and the administration has been informing world leaders about it. The United States is now one of the 50 countries that has not ratified the Paris Agreement (due to firm Republican opposition in the Senate), but would join just two other nations that do not support the pact: Nicaragua and Syria. "Do I think man has some impact?" The decision would be a significant foreign policy break with almost every other nation on earth and a major reversal of the Obama administration's efforts on climate change, CNN reported.

A formal withdrawal would take years, experts say, a situation that led the president of the European Commission to speak dismissively of Trump on Wednesday.

Cohn, the Trump economic adviser, also said last week that the president's views were "evolving".

"Once China's development reaches a certain level, it has to move to a sustainable model, that means we have to push green development", he said. Calculations suggest it could result in emissions of up to 3 billion tons of additional carbon dioxide in the air a year _ enough to melt ice sheets faster, raise seas higher and trigger more extreme weather.
