Mother fears woman accused of leak will be made an example

Accused leaker Reality Winner pleads not guilty, denied bail

Winner's is the latest in a string of cases involving breaches at the National Security Agency, a super secret code-breaking agency still smarting from Edward Snowden's 2013 disclosures of its global surveillance programs.

The document that victor allegedly leaked was a report detailing attempts by hackers from Russian military intelligence to penetrate a company that sells voter registration software as well as local election officials.

Winner's attorney, Titus Thomas Nichols, declined to confirm whether she is accused of leaking the NSA report received by The Intercept.

Prosecutors also said 25-year-old Reality Winner might try to flee the USA if released on bond.

In February, in the wake of Trump issuing his ban on travelers from several Muslim majority nations, she said: "the most risky entry to this country was the orange fascist we let into the white house".

The 25-year-old US government contractor has worked since February in Augusta, Georgia, for a federal agency that neither prosecutors nor her defense lawyer will name and where she had access to sensitive documents.

Winner, a contractor with Pluribus International Corporation in Georgia, faces up to 10 years in prison for leaking classified information.

Reality Leigh Winner, a 25-year-old government contractor, remained locked up Tuesday on federal charges that she mailed a classified report to an online news outlet.

Gabe Gutierrez reported from Augusta, Georgia, and Daniella Silva from NY.

Online news outlet The Intercept published a story Monday describing a Russian cyberattack on a USA voting software supplier prior to the 2016 election.

The report victor allegedly leaked is dated May 5, the same date as the document The Intercept posted online.

Winner's mother and stepfather told ABC affiliate WSB-TV in Atlanta earlier this week that victor, an Air Force veteran, is a patriot. Authorities are looking at two laptops, a tablet and four cellphones seized from Winner's home as well as spiral-bound notebooks.

The Affidavit says a visible crease mark on the document passed to a website called "The Intercept" tipped them off that the file was printed from a secure server.

Winner's stepfather, Gary Davis, agrees, saying he worries she won't be seen in a positive light.

In the process, the intelligence agency noticed that the reports "appeared to be folded and/or creased, suggesting they had been printed and hand-carried out of a secured space", according to the official legal complaint. The information in them are arguably classified and she may have shared something that was damaging from a national security standpoint, she may not have. She's never ran away from anything in her life.

"There's not much to comment on right now as far as whether there is a connection between my client and Intercept", Nichols said.

"The government is scraping and clawing to build a mountain out of a molehill".

Victor also used #NotMyPresident in her posts. Other notes detailed how to get a burner email account and phones, and travel details for a trip to Afghanistan Winner allegedly planned to make in the summer.

When prosecutors questioned Winner-Davis about her daughter telling her to "play that angle", she said it was true.

Victor has been charged with "gathering, transmitting or losing defense information", says The Washington Post.

Neither prosecutors nor Winner's parents have identified the government agency where she worked at the time of her arrest.
