Hawaii Signs Legislation To Implement Goals Of Paris Climate Accord Anyway

President Donald Trump announced last week that the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord, and North Korea is not happy.

The governor, as well as the state's county mayors and state representatives gathered in Honolulu to sign two bills and a mayor's agreement in support of the Paris agreement, according to a press release.

"The selfish act of the US does not only have grave consequences for the worldwide efforts to protect the environment, but poses great danger to other areas as well".

"As an institution of higher learning, it is essential that we publicly affirm the scientific evidence of the human contributions to climate change", said President Schall on the decision to opt in.

Hawaii's new legislation includes a bill that expands the state's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to align with the Paris Agreement. He also signed HB 1578, which creates a Carbon Farming Task Force to ID agricultural and aquacultural practices in improving soil health and "the capture of long-term storage of atmospheric carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change". We are being joined by business leaders, governors, university presidents and millions of citizens across the United States to pledge "We Are Still In" - and we will achieve and exceed America's commitment to the Paris Agreement.

In the statement, Comey said Trump asked him to stay behind in the Oval Office after a meeting with a larger group, and as they stood near a grandfather clock, Trump told him, "I want to talk about Mike Flynn".

In the op-ed, the mayors address Pittsburgh's history as an industrial and polluted city continuing to make stride toward cleaning up its air. Hawaii is joining at least 12 other states that have formed the U.S. Climate Alliance and promised to remain committed to the goals in the Paris deal.

In announcing the withdrawal on June 1 from the almost universally supported agreement, Trump earned the scorn of the European Union, China, India, Brazil, and many other nations that have been taking ambitious actions to reduce their emissions of global warming gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane. While Trump's withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement can't be completed until 2020, he has said his administration will "cease all implementation" of the accord effective immediately. With Trump pulling out of the agreement, the US will join only two other countries that have not ratified the pact: Syria and Nicaragua.
