Facebook deploys artificial intelligence to fight terrorism on its network

Other questions, he said, include: "Is social media good for democracy?"

"We're now experimenting with analyzing text that we've already removed for praising or supporting terrorist organizations such as ISIS and Al Qaeda so we can develop text-based signals that such content may be terrorist propaganda".

Facebook's AI uses image matching and language understanding across multiple platforms and applications to filter and remove terrorist content. "This work is never finished because it is adversarial, and the terrorists are continuously evolving their methods, too", Bickert and Fishman concede.

In response, Simon Milner, Facebook's director of policy, said, "We do not allow groups or people that engage in terrorist activity, or posts that express support for terrorism". This new emphasis from Zuckerberg has followed uproar over Facebook's role in the proliferation of false news accounts during the USA election campaign previous year, as well as the spread of extreme content, such as videos of murder, posted to Facebook.

The move comes after growing pressure from governments for technology companies to do more to take down material such as terrorist propaganda.

Facebook says it has grown its team of specialists so that it now has 150 people working on counter-terrorism specifically, including academic experts on counterterrorism, former prosecutors, former law enforcement agents and analysts, and engineers. Earlier this month, British Prime Minister Theresa May called on governments to form global agreements to prevent the spread of extremism online.

"We're constantly identifying new ways that terrorist actors try to circumvent our systems - and we update our tactics accordingly", Bickert and Fishman said.

"Encryption technology has many legitimate uses, from protecting our online banking to keeping our photos safe".

Companies have sharply boosted the volume of content they have removed in the last two years, but these efforts haven't proven effective enough to tamp down a groundswell of criticism from governments and advertisers.

Back in December, Facebook teamed up with Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube to create a database for terrorist propaganda and recruitment.

One of the prime applications of this technology is identifying content that clearly violates Facebook's terms of use.

"We've been able to dramatically reduce the time period that terrorist recidivist accounts are on Facebook", she said.

The company says it is also using algorithms to detect "clusters" of accounts or images relating to support for terrorism. The company is also attempting to tackle terrorist activity on WhatsApp and Instagram as well, the post said.

Digital media and tech companies have faced criticism (as well as legal tussles) over their use of encryption software, which makes it hard for government authorities to monitor the communications between groups they deem to be extremist.

In the post, Bickert and Fishman admit "AI can't catch everything".
