Rep. Steve Scalise, the U.S. House majority whip, also was critically wounded during the attack that injured several people.

Walberg noted that Mika was a "wonderful asset" to the GOP baseball team, waking up early in the morning to help out "when he didn't have to". "Our family continues to be in shock, and we ask for privacy while we focus on Matt and his care", the family said. He is a graduate of Adrian College. Walberg says Mika was helping the Republican team prepare for a game against the Democrats.

Three Michigan congressman, including Bishop, were all present at the baseball practice when the shooting erupted. Mika was shot Wednesday morning by a gunman, identified by the Associated Press as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Ill.
