White House denies Trump wants Mueller out, but heat's on

The appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller to serve as special counsel investigating matters related to Russian Federation and the 2016 presidential campaign served to effectively quell the firestorm of criticism launched by Donald Trump's decision to fire Mueller's successor at the FBI.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel; I think he's weighing that option", Ruddy told NewsHour's Judy Woodruff.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said Tuesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" that while he feels "independent counsels are very risky", he doesn't think Trump should force Mueller out.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire the special prosecutor overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

In his latest flagrant slap to the face of American rule of law, Donald Trump has reportedly considered firing special investigator Robert Mueller, apparently for the mere fact that he is investigating Donald Trump.

"I personally think it would be a very significant mistake", Ruddy added.

Christopher Ruddy, chief executive of conservative group Newsmax Media, Mr Ruddy was at the White House on Monday, but United States media reported that he did not meet Mr Trump while there.

Mr Rosenstein is charged with Mr Mueller's fate because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from all matters having to do with the Trump-Russia investigation.

But Stephen Gillers, a New York University professor who specializes in legal and judicial ethics, said the Mueller interview with Trump presented "no conflict whatsoever". "I think the best thing to do is to let Robert Mueller do his job".

But no. The president's friends are now pressing the argument that Mueller must go, too. He could either ask Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to fire him, or, if Rosentein refuses, repeal the regulations that govern the appointment and fire him himself-a scenario that would echo Nixon's notorious Saturday Night Massacre.

The White House wouldn't deny or confirm the report and said, "only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

Democratic senators repeatedly criticized Sessions for dispatching Rosenstein to testify today in his place about the Justice Department's budget to an Appropriations subcommittee. "So I would consider it and if there was good cause I would do it and if there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter what anybody said".

Comey testified that he believed the revelations in his memos - including concern that Trump sought to influence the FBI's Russian Federation investigation - would prompt the appointment of a special counsel. If Rosenstein refused, Trump could fire Rosenstein. Such a move would create a firestorm coming weeks after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. He wants the President to fire Mueller and wants a political fight against the very idea of special prosecutors.

Rep. Mark Walker said Mueller is broadly respected by both Republicans and Democrats, although he noted that the respect isn't set in stone.

But a long-time friend of Mr Trump said the president was considering sacking Mr Mueller.
