Boxer who was in critical condition after fight is dead, family says

Tim Hague, right, made a decision to swap the UFC cage for a boxing ring The Canadian fighter's friends and family are at his bedside as he fights for his life.

Hague, who had a 1-2 record as a pro boxer before Friday night, fell heavily to the canvas, appearing to smack his head on the mat during a brutal knockout.

The 34-year-old heavyweight last fought in mixed martial arts in July of 2016.

A video on YouTube that purports to be the fight shows Hague lying still on his back on the canvas after taking a punch to his head from Braidwood.

Writing on Facebook the following day, his sister Jackie Neil said: "Thanks folks for all your messages and kind words".

Melanie Lubovac of KO Boxing wouldn't comment on the event when reached late Saturday when Hague's family said he was in critical condition, but Lubovac said a statement would likely be issued Sunday or Monday.

"He was surrounded by family, listening to his favourite songs".

The tragedy has happened only a months before Conor McGregor swaps UFC for boxing when he fights Floyd Mayweather. Hague battled Adam Braidwood in the Shaw Conference Centre and was knocked completely out in the second round. "We are all with him".

Hague, a school teacher in Canada, started his MMA career in 2006 and won 10 of his first 11 fights, including his UFC debut - a first-round submission of Pat Barry at UFC 98 in Las Vegas.

Our deepest condolences go out to Hague's family and friends during this hard and tragic time.

The fight lasted two rounds before a left hook knocked Hague to the ground.

Hague, who fights out of Edmonton, also fought in the UFC.
