BJP set to keep Gujarat, but Cong tally may be up

Jai Sardar Jai Bhawani to Jai Bheem Rahul tries it all in Modi’s home turf

The Times Now-VMR and Zee News-Axis exit polls predicted that the BJP would win 51 of the total 68 Assembly seats in the state. Several reports have suggested that earlier the rates were divided into three segments - Rs 1.50 for 110 seats, Rs 3.50 for 125, and Rs 7 for 150 seats. The BJP leaders were right in claiming that the traders may have been unhappy with the party over the issue opf demonetisation, but they would not ditch the Prime Minister. Results will be declared on December 18.

"A victory for the BJP will be received well by the market while a surprise defeat (against the forecasts of the exit polls) would be a large negative surprise for the market".

Sebi as well as stock exchanges have stepped up surveillance to keep a close tab on possible manipulations and excessive volatility in the markets as exit polls on Thursday indicated a clear majority for the ruling BJP in Gujarat. The exit poll also indicates that Congress will not be too far behind and are estimated to bag 65 of 75 seats, a marked improvement from the 2012 elections where they had managed 61 seats.

Incidentally, based on Thursday's exit polls the pricing in the betting market was vying on 92-94 seats for BJP and 90-92 seats for Congress. The Congress is likely to improve its seats tally but will fall short of the magic number needed to win the Assembly election. The saffron party is likely to get 21-27 seats with 52 per cent vote share. The current analysis by NewsX in collaboration with CNX says that BJP would get 45.40% of votes whereas Congress would get a 37.75% vote share. In Ahmedabad city, Vejalpur seat reported 69.01% voting, the highest among the 16 urban seats.
