IL loses population, drops to 6th-largest state

Utah’s population is growing faster than every state except for Idaho and Nevada say new Census estimates

Eight states lost population between July 1, 2016, and July 1, 2017.

A change in population is dependent on two measures, the natural change, or births vs deaths, and migration, or the people moving in vs the people moving out.

Wyoming saw the largest percentage decline.

In all, 8,300 more people left Wyoming than moved to the state over the past year but new births meant that the total loss of population was less than that.

As of July 1, an estimated 10,273,419 people lived in North Carolina, almost 117,000 more than the previous year.

Looking at the numbers in a different way, Texas leads in the numeric increase of residents, adding 399,734 people to its population over one year, with a total population of 28.3 million.

The state continued to rank 30th in the nation in population.

Idaho was the nation's fastest-growing state over the a year ago. IL also experienced a natural increase in population, meaning the number of births over deaths. California is by far the most populated with 39.5 million residents.

Since Texas' population was already large, the state grew just 1.4 percent over the past year.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates released Wednesday show Illinois' population fell by 33,703 people between July 1, 2016 and July 1 of this year. For domestic numbers, MA saw a loss of 23,000 residents moving to other states.

The Census data reveal the cause of Illinois' shrinking population: heavy losses of Illinoisans to other states.

The U.S. population grew by 2.3 million to 325.7 million, a less than 1% increase in population. But Connecticut attracted some 17,000 people from other countries, a little more than a third of the number for MA.
