On Tuesday afternoon, more than 100 people watched the fourth-annual Kwanzaa celebration at the Jefferson School African-American Heritage Center.

Happy Kwanzaa! The holiday, which celebrated its 50th anniversary previous year, kicks off December 26.

The candles - one black, three red and three green - each symbolize a different principle: unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), objective (nia), creativity (kuumba) and faith (imani). It was first celebrated in 1966. The seven principles are: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith).
