South African tourist killed in Egypt hot air balloon crash

A~tourist has been killed and seven others injured when a sightseeing balloon crashed over the southern Egyptian city of Luxor. Luxor Governor Mahmoud Badr said a statement about the incident would be released shortly, AFP reported.

The balloon was travelling over the ancient city when it was forced off course and into a mountainous area by strong winds, according to reports.

A health ministry spokesman said that two of the wounded were in serious condition.

All of those involved in the accident are believed to be foreign tourists. The injured included tourists from Spain, South Africa and Argentina.

The balloon was carrying both Egyptians and foreign tourists, with the nationality of the latter not yet having been disclosed.

Hot air balloon crashes have occurred in the region before.

Hot air balloon rides were temporarily suspended in Egypt in 2016 after a crash landing led to the injuries of 22 Chinese tourists.
