Ali, Rashid spin England to dramatic win over NZ

Moeen Ali was as surprised as anyone as he combined with Adil Rashid to plunder New Zealand's batting stocks in England's dramatic four-run victory in the third one-day worldwide in Wellington on Saturday.

The hosts had looked comfortably placed to chase down England's 234 when Stokes turned the game as spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid took five wickets for 23 runs between them in the space of 41 balls. Most of the England batsmen reached double figures but they were unable to dominate with captain Eoin Morgan top scoring with 48.

MOEEN ALI and his spin buddy Adil Rashid twirled England to victory in the third one-day global.

"It's very frustrating. Credit to England, they had to assess and get a good total at the halfway stage", he said at the post-match presentation. New Zealand's batting line-up - barring Latham and Taylor - has struggled to make its presence felt and that would worry the think-tank.

Williamson welcomed an 11th century and 5000 runs in the intermediate format of the worldwide game en route to a commanding 112 not out from 143 deliveries, six fours and two sixes included, but it was not enough.

Earlier, Jason Roy (15), Joe Root (20) and Jonny Bairstow (19) all failed to build on starts, before the pitch and the bowling of De Grandhomme (1-24) and Ish Sodhi (3-53) restricted Morgan and Stokes to just 13 runs from the first 46 balls of their stand.

Munro was close to being run out by Root as he made a skittish start to his knock but chanced his arm to club seven fours before he chipped a Rashid googly to short cover where Stokes took a superb catch diving to his left.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who scored his 11th one-day century, however, combined with Mitchell Santner to halt the slide and then gave the hosts hopes of achieving a remarkable win with a 96-run partnership.

"Not really. It was a game where we weren't at our smartest". He could only score 39 runs during his stay at the crease that lasted as many as 73 deliveries.

"It was a brilliant game of cricket, again".

England have played four previous ODIs at the Westpac, but are yet to win one - bowled out for 89, 130, and 123 respectively, and then making 309 for 6, before being beaten by nine wickets by Sri Lanka. The fourth ODI will be played at the University Oval in Dunedin on Wednesday and the fifth at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday.
