Jordanian King Abdullah delivers talk on Islamic heritage

Jordan King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein today said he is truly delighted with the warm welcome that he has received in India, and hoped that the visit will herald a new start to the historic chapter of relationship between the two countries.

He lauded Jordan's efforts in tackling radicalisation and terrorism and committed India's cooperation in this regard.

The Forum, which is held under the title "Promoting Investment, Trade and Partnerships between Jordan and India", is organized by the Jordan Chamber of Commerce and the Jordan Investment Commission in cooperation with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

The two leaders discussed a gamut of issues ranging from Syrian refugees to Palestine and resolved to enhance cooperation in the economic sphere, T S Tirumurti, secretary (economic relations) in the external affairs ministry, told reporters.

Tirumurti said both Modi and King Abdullah welcomed the signing of the MoU on defence cooperation folloiwng Thursday's meeting.

He said faith inspires countries like India and Jordan where different religious and ethnic groups have lived together.

Appreciating the Jordanian King's work in the area of deradicalisation, Modi said it would prove beneficial to counter barbarism inflicted by extremists.

"Those who attack humanity in a barbaric way perhaps don't themselves understand that they are harming the very religion they claim to defend", he said. he continued, with a message that appeared directed at both Islamist terrorist groups and Hindu extremist groups responsible for attacks in recent years.

The conference, themed "Islamic Heritage: Promoting Understanding and Moderation", has brought together scholars of the Islamic studies from across the world.

King Abdullah II further said that an attack in the name of religion is an attack on religion.

"What is heard in the news and what is shown about religion is what separates people", he said.

A translation of a book "A Thinking Person's Guide to Islam - the Essence of Islam in 12 versus from the Quran" was also released at the event.

"The global fight against terror is not against religions or Muslims , it's a war against hate and violence..." He was accompanied by Jordan's King Abdullah II who is on a three-day India visit.

Stressing that India embraced many religions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that every Indian should take pride that all religions flourished in India.

"The campaign against terrorism, extremism and radicalisation is not a campaign aimed at any particular faith". We need to take back the airwaves and the Internet from the voices of hatred - those who have victimised our world, not only with bombs and terror, but with ignorance and lies.
