Donald Trump fires Rex Tillerson as US Secretary of State

WASHINGTON DC- MARCH 13 President Donald Trump holds a meeting with members of his cabinet including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis in the Cabinet Room of the White House

UPDATE: Goldstein, the State Department spokesperson and Tillerson aide cited in this report, was sacked by the White House roughly three hours after releasing the statement, according to the Associated Press.

European diplomats saw some chance Pompeo may have more influence over Trump than Tillerson, who antagonized the USA president by reportedly calling him a "moron" and who differed with Trump on Iran and other issues.

"I'll now return to private life as a private citizen, as a proud American, proud of the opportunity I've had to serve my country", he said. Tillerson was reportedly not given specific advance notice of his termination, and he said that he received a call from the president around noon, three hours after the tweet.

"To my foreign service officers, and civil service colleagues, we all took the same oath of office, whether you are career, employee or a political appointee, we are all bound by that common commitment", he said.

US President Donald Trump today fired his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who is now on a visit to Africa, and replaced him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

Pompeo is widely seen as a loyal ally of Trump. Describing Tillerson's mood, Goldstein said: "He's accepting".

In recent months, Haspel has been running the day-to-day operations at the agency, while Pompeo spent a lot of time at the White House, according to former and current CIA officials with knowledge of the matter and a former White House official.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she had a positive working relationship with Mr Tillerson and that would continue with Mr Pompeo.

One of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's top aides has been fired mere hours after Tillerson himself was dismissed by President Trump. Trump frequently criticized the agreement as a candidate. Tillerson has pushed Trump to remain and had been pursuing a delicate strategy with European allies and others to try to improve or augment the Obama-era deal to Trump's liking. "Really, it was a different mind-set, a different thinking".

Trump said Tuesday he made the change as part of preparing for his anticipated meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on a possible nuclear deal.

Over the weekend, Pompeo said the U.S. would not make any concessions ahead of potential talks, but that North Korea must stand by its offers to halt nuclear and missile testing as they take place, allow the continuation of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, and leave denuclearization open for negotiation. "President Trump's actions show that every official in his Administration is at the mercy of his personal whims and his worship of Putin".

"The anxiety that Trump has about Tillerson being more competent than him has finally played itself out". It was famously reported that Tillerson privately called Trump a "f****** moron".

Pompeo, a former congressman, has become a favourite of Trump's, impressing the President with his engaging approach during morning intelligence briefings. Even Democrats who voted for Pompeo's confirmation to lead the Central Intelligence Agency past year now say they have concerns. Trump tweeted, "He will do a fantastic job!"

Russian Federation "has reasserted itself aggressively, invading and occupying Ukraine, threatening Europe, and doing nothing to aid in the destruction and defeat of ISIS", Pompeo said during his confirmation hearing in January of 2017.

The pair also never developed a particularly warm relationship. Blessing said he believes the president will have Pompeo play on his knowledge of North Korea and Russian Federation.

Tillerson had said earlier he would not quit his position, despite reports of disagreements with the White House. Trump said there was no reason to consult him because no matter what the group decided, Tillerson would be against it, the official said.
