'The View's Joy Behar Apologizes For Mike Pence Mental Illness Remark

National Guardsman who threatened to kill Mike Pence sentenced

"It's another thing when Jesus talks to you", Behar said.

The controversy stemmed from a comment Behar made on "The View" last month during a discussion of former White House aide Omarosa Manigault-Newman, who criticized Pence as "scary" and "extreme".

"When I heard that ABC had a program where my Christian faith had been described as a mental illness, I thought it was important for me to speak out", Pence said.

Pence encouraged Behar to also apologize "to tens of millions of Americans who were equally offended".

"I think Vice President Pence is right". "She picked up the phone, she called me, she was very honest, and she apologized".

Behar responded: "It's one thing to talk to Jesus".

Pence said was happy that Behar had apologized to him personally, but wanted her to apologize to all Christians. "I don't mean to offend people", she said, "but apparently I keep doing it". "Look I'm Catholic. I'm a faithful person, but I don't know that I want my vice president, um - speaking in tongues and having Jesus speak to him", she said.

Her comments launched a protest that made it all the way to a shareholder's meeting of ABC parent Walt Disney Corp.

He said he told her that it was also important to apologize to all that were upset by what she said.

"That would make me mentally ill since I'm a Christian myself", she said when asked if she believes "Christians are mentally ill" the following day. Behar finally addressed the viewers and offered a twelve-second apology on the Tuesday, March 13 edition of The View.

On a Tuesday episode of the daytime talk show, co-host Behar reiterated the apology she made to the vice president in a private phone call.

"It is simply wrong for ABC to have a television program that expresses that kind of religious intolerance", he added.

A national campaign led by Media Research Center President Brent Bozell applied pressure on ABC in a call for a public apology, with Bozell saying a private apology is "not almost enough".

The host's remarks were called "slander" and "anti-Christian bigotry". Read the rest at Fox News. Thousands of Americans and the Media Research Center took offense to her comment and began a crusade, contacting the advertisers that sponsor The View to no avail.
