Palestinian teen sentenced to 8 months for slapping Israeli soldiers

Bassem Tamimi the father of sixteen-year-old Palestinian Ahed Tamimi, a well-known campaigner against Israel's occupation waves at his daughter during a hearing in the Israeli military court at Ofer military prison in the West Bank vill

The sentence resulted from a plea deal her lawyer reached with the Israeli military court.

Furthermore, Palestinian families have to wait for years for #Israel to release the bodies of relatives killed by security services, Last week, a Palestinian stabbed and seriously wounded an Israeli security guard in Jerusalem's Old City before being shot dead by a police office. Nariman Tamimi's sentence is eight months in prison and a fine of 6,000 shekels ($US 1,725).

Was it a reluctance to acknowledge that their oh so innocent and heroic Palestinian icon had actually admitted to the aggravated assault of an IDF soldier, incitement to violence and disrupting soldiers on two other occasions?

The plea deal included Nur and Nariman El-Tamimi, Ahed's cousin and mother, who were involved in the incident of slapping an armed soldier who entered the driveway of their house. According to a statement from Avaaz, the organization running the campaign to free Ahed and Nariman, the military prosecution dropped eight of the 12 charges -which initially carried a sentence of up to 10 years in prison - against Ahed as part of the plea bargain.

The trial, set to resume Wednesday in a West Bank military court, is expected to drag on for months, Tamimi said.

Tamimi's angry altercation with an Israeli soldier outside her West Bank home made her a worldwide symbol of resistance against Israeli occupation and oppresion but quickly got her jailed without bail.

Her case has become a cause célèbre in Israel and overseas, with critics accusing her and her family of orchestrating a PR campaign to discredit Israel, and supporters, mostly on the left, saying Israel is persecuting juveniles under the guise of security.

Ahed Tamimi, was 16 at the time of the December incident.

The refusal of the military justices to expose what goes on in the Military Juvenile Court denied us the opportunity to witness a rare occurrence in the military courts-an actual trial. She described the deal as the "best decision" available. She can be the megaphone of the hundreds of Palestinian children who remain locked up with little attention paid to them.

Some 562 Palestinian children have been arrested in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem in the three and a half months since US President Donald Trump announced his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"Creating a false façade of a fair legal system that purports to safeguard the rights of minors tried in its courts serves a political goal: legitimizing the occupation and silencing criticism of it", the report said. She is a freedom fighter who is leading the confrontation against Israeli rule. Prolonged pretrial detention, abuse of under-age children and sham trials would be focused on much more than if she were out of prison.
